Why this Topic Matters to Us

Higher education can open doors to stability, new opportunities, and empowerment for families in the child welfare system. Youth, parents, and caregivers often face challenges when trying to go to college or vocational programs, like balancing responsibilities, filling out applications, and figuring out financial aid. Caregivers can offer support and guidance, while youth may face obstacles that other young people their age don’t. Listening to real experiences helps us understand these challenges and provide the tools, resources, and support families need to thrive.

Only about 3% of foster youth who enroll earn a degree by age 26

"I got a full ride scholarship to a school I didn’t really want to go to, and I just accepted it because I thought it was my only opportunity.  I didn't know that I was eligible to go to any free community college!”
